The "Jack of Plates," a variant of brigandine armor, rose to prominence in the 16th century, especially in England during the Tudor period. Crafted from fabric or leather, it featured small metal plates sewn between layers, offering infantrymen an affordable, flexible, yet protective armor alternative to the more cumbersome full plate. Its design efficiently dispersed the force of blows, granting protection against various attacks. However, with advancements in firearms by the late 16th century, its popularity waned as the evolving battlefield demanded different protective measures.
Step into the annals of history and embrace the thrill of crafting your very own Jack of Plates! At Live Oak Workshop, we offer plates in 1mm thick 410 stainless steel for those seeking an authentic weight and feel, and 1.6mm thick Aluminum for those desiring a lighter touch without compromising on the iconic appearance.
How much will a suite weight?
Weight per 100 pieces:- 1mm 410 Stainless Steel ~1.60 lb. (711 grams)
- 1.6mm 5052 Aluminum ~0.93 lb. (424 grams)
(Weights may very slightly from batch to batch)
How many plates do I need?
This will depend on how much you protect. Do you just protect the "squishy bits" or your whole body, front and back.. Historically you would have protected everything. But for SCA combat you are only "required" to protect specific parts of your torso.
Mapping layouts from historical references we feel pretty confidently that from center hole to center hole it takes 289 plates to cover 1 square foot for the traditional hex layout (download this SVG to see). However, that may change based on how tight or lose you setup your grid and tie in your plates.(we are still ramping up on Inventory, please allow up to 2 weeks to ship orders)
